Hyperpigmentation is a very common skin problem that we see in our Boca Raton office. Hyperpigmentation is where parts of the skin is darkened by sun exposure, skin injuries, hormonal changes, acne and many times pregnancy, which is commonly referred to as the "mask of pregnancy".

Hyperpigmentation can occur on the face, hands, and body. We often see excessive hyperpigmentation on the chest because many Floridians are consistently exposed to the sun in this area.

Hyperpigmentation is triggered by an over production of melanin. Melanin is a substance in the body that creates color in the skin. This over production is caused by melanocytes in the lower layer of the skin. Due to many triggers, the body can lose it's natural ability to regulate pigment production. The sun stimulates the melnaocytes, thus causing the areas of the skin to become darker. It can appear as small age spots, freckles or large patches of dark skin.

Hyperpigmentation Treatment

Our dermatologists, aestheticians and plastic surgeons are very skilled and experienced in treating hyperpigmentation. As one of the best, most recognized aesthetic and laser centers in the nation, our state-of-the-art facility is poised to help any patient achieve their aesthetic goals.

Your treatment plan will depend on the severity and type of hyperpigmentation, your lifestyle and commitment level. Some of the hyperpigmentation treatments we use in our facility are:

VI Peel

The VI Peel is a painless peel performed by an aesthetician. It uses the strongest, most effective acids and vitamins that tackle the skin at the cellular level rather than just burning off the skin. The VI Peel is very effective in eliminating and reducing even the most stubborn hyperpigmentation including melasma, and discoloration created by acne.

In addition to correcting hyperpigmentation, the VI Peel has a number of other benefits. It helps erase fine lines, shrink large pores, and build collagen that will tighten the skin.

The peel is applied topically. It may sting slightly. A numbing of the skin take place after the first pass of the solution is applied. Aestheticians can often ease any discomfort by applying a cool breeze to the skin.

Immediately after the treatment your skin will sometimes appear slightly pink, possibly even yellow - due to the application of retinol, which will be washed off in the morning the following day. Your skin will feel tighter and appear as if you never had anything done. On day three post treatment, the skin will begin to shed lightly and continue to shed for approximately two to three more days.

Since every patient is different, we recommend that you schedule a complimentary consultation to meet with a physician or aesthetician. They will help build a plan that will best meet your needs and aesthetic goals.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

IPL, also known as Intense Pulsed Light or Broad Band Light, is a device that uses a wide range of light wavelengths to target brown and red color in the skin. The IPL treatment delivers light to the deeper parts of the skin, leaving the top layer unharmed. This is also known as a "Foto Facial" or "Photo Rejuvenation".

IPL treatments help to eliminate hyperpigmentation, sun spots, liver spots, fine lines and wrinkles and reddish complexions. This is often a second course of action that our providers take when a patient's pigmentation has not responded to at-home skin care products and in-office chemical peels. IPL is also used as method to achieve a quicker result.

Patients feel a slight stinging during the treatment. Some compare it to a rubber band snap. Treatment time will vary depending on the area, but usually takes about 30 minutes. The treated area will get darker and then flake off, revealing fresh smooth skin in the days following treatment.

A series of treatments, about 4 weeks apart, is recommended to achieve optimal results.

The patient to the left was experiencing melasma, a common form of hyperpigmentation. To tackle the dark patches our aesthetician first started her on the Obagi Nu Derm System to lighten and prepare her skin for treament. She then underwent IPL and TCA Peel treatments, alternating them every two weeks for the results you see here.

As you can see above, a complete skin care program yields the best results.

IPL (also known as BBL) treatments are also used in our Boca Raton office to eliminate discoloration in all areas of the body. The décolletage, an area of the body often neglected, can reveal your age and show a lot of damage from the long summer sin Florida.

In the photos below, Dr. Jason Pozner used BBL (Broad Band Light) to eliminate brown spots and excessive redness caused by sun exposure.
