Impetigo is a common bacterial skin infection among children, as well as in people who play contacts sports such as wrestling. Although impetigo is not common in adults, it is contagious and easily spread among all ages.
What causes Impetigo?
Impetigo is caused by a very active strain of bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus. This bacteria is often found on skin and in the nose, causing different kinds of skin problems such as cellulitis, abscesses and acne.
How do I know if I have Impetigo?
Impetigo is most often located on the arms, legs or face. Once exposed to it, the incubation period is only about 1-3 days before the breakout appears. The lesions appear as honey-colored scabs on the skin. Without a dermatologist's diagnosis, however, you may not know for certain that impetigo is the cause of the lesions.
How we treat Impetigo
Dr. De Araujo and Dr. Schwedelson most generally treat impetigo with oral and/or topical antibiotics.
