We think it’s safe to say that BOTOX® has done more to revolutionize non-surgical facial rejuvenation than any other product.

A Bit of History:
Like most successful aesthetic treatments, BOTOX® originated as a treatment for illness, specifically neurological disorders. Diluted Botulinum toxin was used to treat painful muscle spasm as early as the 1950’s. In the 1980s, it was approved for crossed eyes (strabismus), involuntary facial muscle spasms, and neck pain. In 2002, BOTOX®  Cosmetic was approved by the FDA to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe lines between the eyebrows. Since that time, BOTOX® has enjoyed immense success for muscle pain disorders, with approvals pending in many European countries where studies were conducted on headaches (including migraine), prostatic symptoms, and even asthma and obesity. It’s also currently used to reduce severe underarm perspiration.

BOTOX® is widely used as a cosmetic enhancement to temporarily reduce wrinkles and fine lines in the face, and realx crow's feet. BOTOX® was approved by the FDA for cosmetic use in 2002.

What it Treats:
Frown lines
Crows feet
Forehead wrinkles

During your treatment Botox is injected into areas where the muscles repeatedly contract. The muscles are relaxed, making the wrinkles less noticeable. Results last for three to four months and are visible a as soon as 12 days after the BOTOX is injected into the affected area.

How BOTOX® Works:

BOTOX® works by blocking nerve impulses and temporarily relaxing the muscle into which it is injected, eliminating the muscle’s ability to make a wrinkle.

Where BOTOX® is Used:
BOTOX®, is used to relax the muscles of animation in the face, those used in smiling and frowning. It’s usually injected into the wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet), into the horizontal lines in the forehead and into the lines around the mouth. Because BOTOX® ® is a very thin liquid, it is injected with a very tiny needle. This means you’ll have little to no discomfort, particularly since we apply a topical numbing cream prior to treatment.

Side Effects of BOTOX®:
Botox has a very low occurrence of side effects when used appropriately.     Although there are no reports of adverse drug interactions in healthy people, we do recommend that you avoid anti-inflammatory medication, vitamin E, and aspirin for two weeks prior to your BOTOX® ® treatment, to avoid bruising at the injection site. If you regularly take aspirin or blood thinners such as Plavix or Coumadin, please consult with your physician before discontinuing those medications.

The Procedure
Using a very fine gauge needle, BOTOX® is injected into the appropriate area to relax the muscles. Following the injection, we’ll give you a small ice pack to hold on the area to reduce any discomfort. Since the actual procedure takes only about ten minutes, you can return to your daily routine immediately. However, please wait a full 4 hours before lying down. Massaging the treated area is prohibited as this might cause the BOTOX® to extend to the surrounding muscles. To enhance effectiveness, exercising the muscle every fifteen minutes throughout the first hour post-injection is highly recommended.

You will start to see results anywhere from 24 hours after injection up to ten days later, with the peak effect about 2-3 weeks following injection.  Patients are all unique, but most find that their injections will last about 4-6 months. Our patients generally stick to an “every 3 or 4 months” schedule.

Who Can Inject BOTOX® in Florida?
In the state of Florida, only a licensed medical doctor, a nurse practitioner or a physician assistant (PA) can inject BOTOX®. Our PA, Krystie Lennox, is a gentle and expert injector, as are our surgeons.

What about BOTOX® Parties?
We do not do Botox parties in the homes of our patients because we believe that aesthetic treatments should be done in a clean, well-staffed medical setting by qualified medical practitioners.
