Have Beautiful Legs Today with a Relatively Painless Out-Patient Procedure

Stop hiding your legs behind pants and long dresses because of unsightly varicose or spider veins. Varicose and spider veins will not just disappear by themselves. The condition tends to worsen over time; the sooner you seek treatment the sooner you will see the positive results. Treating this condition in a timely manner will make the process simpler, faster and more economical.

Sclerotherapy, a treatment that has been performed by medical providers for over 50 years, can diminish the small veins that appear on the legs and calves. Quality and excellence is our top priority. Every single treatment is personalized and performed with care. This individualized therapy will be administered according to the tone of your skin, the size of your veins, and the stage of your condition, using the most advanced techniques.

Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy treatments are performed in our Boca Raton office by nationally board-certified Physician Assistant, Lori Harrington. Lori has over 20 years of clinical experience in a variety of fields and has worked exclusively in the treatment of varicose and spider veins since 1990 using traditional and ultrasound-guided Sclerotherapy. She is considered an expert in her field. She has trained many prominent physicians in the South Florida area.

What are varicose and spider veins?
Varicose veins are enlarged veins at or close to the surface of the skin. They often appear twisted, discolored and may be painful. It is common for varicose veins to cause leg aches, fatigue, calf cramps, or restless leg syndrome. Spider veins called telangiectasias are tiny bluish or reddish looking veins at the surface of the skin found on the legs or face.

What causes varicose and spider veins?
The main cause of varicose and spider veins is heredity. Other causative factors:

  • Increasing Age. As you get older, the valves in your veins may weaken and not work as well.

  • Medical History. Being born with weak vein valves increases your risk. Having family members with vein problems also increases your risk. About half of all people who have varicose veins have a family member who has them too.

  • Hormonal Changes. These occur during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. Taking birth control pills and other medicines containing estrogen and progesterone also may contribute to the forming of varicose or spider veins.

  • Pregnancy. During pregnancy, there is a huge increase in the amount of blood in the body. This can cause veins to enlarge. The growing uterus also puts pressure on the veins. Varicose veins usually improve within 3 months after delivery. More varicose veins and spider veins usually appear with each additional pregnancy.

  • Lack of Movement. Sitting or standing for a long time may force your veins to work harder to pump blood to your heart. This may be a bigger problem if you sit with your legs bent or crossed.

  • Sun Exposure. This can cause spider veins on the cheeks or nose of a fair-skinned person.

Why do these types of veins usually appear in the legs?
Most varicose and spider veins appear in the legs due to the pressure of body weight, force of gravity, and task of carrying blood from the bottom of the body up to the heart. Compared with other veins in the body, leg veins have the toughest job of carrying blood back to the heart. They endure the most pressure. This pressure can be stronger than the one-way valves in the veins.

What happens during the Sclerotherapy procedure?
Because many of the veins interconnect, one injection can eliminate several veins at a time. When the vein is completely closed, the blood cannot flow through it. Thus, the blood finds its way to better, healthier veins and circulation is greatly improved. Don’t be alarmed - there are more veins in our body than are really needed, therefore, when one is totally eliminated, blood easily finds its way into healthier veins.

What happens when the treatment is over?
Since the procedure is completely non-surgical there is no long recovery period. Our patients may resume their normal daily activities immediately.

Will Sclerotherapy present new veins from occurring?
Sclerotherapy does not prevent new veins from appearing. It only treats veins that have been injected.

How are varicose and spider veins treated?
Though a procedure called sclerotherapy both spider veins and superficial varicose veins can be treated. Sclerotherapy is a technique in which a very fine needle is used to inject an FDA* approved solution directly into the veins. The treatment feels like a small mosquito bite. The medication causes a mild, controlled reaction which results in the vein walls and shrinking and ultimately closing.
