What is it?

New to the line of products from Merz Pharmaceuticals is Xeomin®, a naked toxin used to get rid of glabella lines, also known as frown lines.  Although Xeomin® has recently been FDA approved to treat frown lines, it has been used for years to treat neck pains and eyelid spasms.

How is it different?

A competitor to Dysport and Botox, Xeomin® stands apart from the two because it contains no additives.  This means that it does not need to be refrigerated, but more importantly, patients have a much lesser chance of developing antibodies to Xeomin®, leading to less side effects and better results. 

How does it work?

Xeomin® is injected between the eyebrows, essentially paralyzing any wrinkles in the area by blocking nerve signals to the glabella muscles.  One week is needed for a patient to see full results with Xeomin®, and these results can last anywhere from three to six months.  

Who should get it?

Xeomin® will be available in the spring of 2012 for adults who are experiencing deep frown lines.  However, Xeomin® may be approved in the future to treat the forehead and crow’s feet.

What should you know before receiving Xeomin®?

There is no down time with Xeomin®, and patients may resume their regular activities.  Xeomin® can be combined with fillers such as Radiesse and Restylane.  Risks of Xeomin® may include bleeding and bruising at the injection site and allergic reactions such as itching, swelling or shortness of breath.
